Designing for all: Creating accessible & effective graphics for science
This workshop will introduce participants to key principles of graphic design and their application in scientific graphics, with a strong emphasis on accessibility, including considerations for dyslexia, color contrast, color blindness, and alternative text. We will explore common scientific graphics such as graphical abstracts and posters, with hands-on exercises using Affinity Studio, a free and widely used vector-based software.
This workshop helps scientists at all levels enhance their figures using simple, effective design techniques while ensuring their work is clearer and more inclusive. Common types of graphics this training will cover include posters, graphical abstracts, paper figures and, if requested, slideshows.
Ideal for graduate students and researchers
This workshop can be delivered in-person across southern and central UK (e.g., London, Bristol, Oxford, Cardiff, Birmingham). Travel to other UK locations is possible with reasonable travel costs covered. We also offer online workshops in timezones compatible with our working hours.
The in-person workshop lasts around 3.5-4 hours, but we can tailor it to your requirements
We recommend groups of approximately 30 people
