Opportunities

Science graphic designer/illustrator (3 month contract, summer 2025).

Are you a skilled science illustrator with a passion for turning complex scientific ideas into beautiful, accessible visuals? We're looking for an experienced Science Graphic Designer/ Illustrator to join our team at Science Graphic Design for a full-time 3-month contract this summer.

This is not an internship or entry-level opportunity — we’re seeking a confident professional who can work independently and contribute immediately, helping to lighten the workload during a busy season. This could be a great fit for experienced freelancers who enjoy working as part of a team and are looking for consistent, collaborative work over the summer.

What you’ll do

  • Work both independently and as part of the SGD team to create accessible, high-quality science graphics for a variety of clients, including figures for scientific publications and grant applications, graphical abstracts, infographics, branding packages, PPT presentations, report layouts, etc.

  • Manage simultaneous projects, and ensure that all projects are completed on time and to a high standard.

  • Translate scientific concepts into clear, engaging visuals with minimal oversight.

  • Communicate with clients over email and online calls to ensure their graphics requirements are met

Essential requirements

  • A scientific degree in any discipline (Life and Environmental Sciences preferred, but not required), BSc or higher

  • 1–3 years of professional experience as a science illustrator or scientific graphic designer

  • Experience working with academics or research institutions

  • A strong portfolio showcasing work in scientific illustration or data visualization

  • Ability to use specialised design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer) and data visualisation software (e.g. ggplot).

  • Ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and handle multiple projects

  • Excellent attention to detail and visual clarity

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team.

  • To not use generative AI on your workflow

  • You must have the right to live and work in the United Kingdom. We cannot sponsor UK work visas.

Contract Details:

  • Duration: 3 months (Summer 2025). There might be the possibility of extending the contract, but this is not guaranteed.

  • Start Date: Flexible (ideally June)

  • Compensation: Starting from a pro rata annual salary of £25,000, with flexibility to offer more based on your experience and the strength of your portfolio.

  • Remote position only, but must be based and have the right to work in the United Kingdom. We cannot sponsor UK work visas.

  • Full-time is ideal for this role, but we’re open to discussing a 4-day week if you’d like to continue working with your own clients outside SGD

If you're ready to bring your scientific and artistic talents to a collaborative and passionate team, we’d love to hear from you.

To apply, please send your resume, a brief cover letter, and a link to your portfolio to enquiries@sciencegraphicdesign.com

Looking forward to working with you!
